The arrest, which occurred earlier this week, has triggered a strong protest from Algiers, with the Algerian government demanding an immediate explanation from France and release of the consular agent

The Algerian Foreign Ministry has also confirmed that it summoned the French Ambassador to Algiers, Stephane Romatet, to deliver a “strong protest” over the detention of an Algerian consular official in France.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry noted that the development was an unprecedented judicial turn in the history of the two countries’ relations.

The statement added that the arrest was intended to disrupt the process of reviving bilateral relations.

This latest incident comes amid already strained relations between the two countries, rooted in a mix of political disagreements, historical grievances, and competing interests in regional security and migration.

As diplomatic notes fly and tempers rise, the fallout could further complicate efforts to rebuild trust between Paris and Algiers.

Backstory

Following the kidnapping of Amir Boukhors, a prominent critic of the Algerian regime, French authorities have launched a high-profile investigation targeting three suspects—one of whom is an Algerian consular official—believed to be involved in the abduction.

Boukhors, known for his vocal opposition to the Algerian government, was allegedly targeted in a politically motivated abduction.

The case, first reported by French media, has sparked a diplomatic uproar, with Algeria swiftly condemning the detention of its consular agent and demanding answers.

Boukhors, known for his vocal opposition to the Algerian government, was allegedly targeted in what French prosecutors are treating as a politically motivated abduction.

Algeria has condemned the incident, stating that “this new, unacceptable, and unjustified development will severely damage Algerian-French relations” and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the case will not go without consequences.

The North African country also labeled Boukhors as “a saboteur linked to terrorist groups.”

The investigation threatens to deepen an already volatile diplomatic rift between Paris and Algiers, with both countries now trading sharp accusations amid a growing political crisis.

France-Algeria relations

France and Algeria are working to mend their strained relationship, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressing optimism about a “new phase” in relations after meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

This incident comes just days after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot visited Algiers to ease tensions and revive cooperation.

According to Barrot, both sides shared a determination to rebuild a partnership rooted in mutual respect and equality.

“We go back to normal, and to repeat the words of President Tebboune: ‘the curtain is lifted’,” Barrot said in a statement after the talks.

Their relationship has been tense due to disputes over migration policies, visa restrictions, and France’s colonial legacy in Algeria.

While progress is being made, the path forward won’t be easy.

Recent incidents, such as Algeria’s recall of its ambassador to France over France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, and the most recent detention of an Algerian consular agent by French authorities highlight the ongoing challenges.
