French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday called for Europe to maintain greater co-operation with developing countries. He was speaking at the 56th Annual Summit of the World Economic Forum 2026 (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Macron called to strengthen multilateralism to jointly take on the US’s tariffs. If that wasn’t enough, he called France and other European nations to “build bridges” with BRICS countries.

Macron called for tackling the global imbalance through security, defence, and the economic sector. “Another objective (for France and Europe) is to build bridges and more cooperation with emerging countries, the BRICS, and the G20, because the fragmentation of this world would not make sense,” the French President stated.

The President of France laid out the objectives of the G7 bloc, indicating a strong need to support BRICS’ multilateralism. “The objective of this G7 will be to build a framework of cooperation to address the roots of these imbalances and restore efficient convergence and cooperation through multilateral frameworks,” he said.

This isn’t the first time that France has sent feelers to the BRICS alliance. In 2023, Macron expressed that France intends to attend the BRICS summit, held in Kazan, Russia. However, China and Russia blocked his interest, citing that France could gain internal information and sabotage its ideas.

Therefore, France did not attend the BRICS 2023 summit as its expression of interest was rejected. Since then, Macron has been steadily praising the alliance and the way it handles global finances and the US. “Faced with the brutalisation of the world, France and Europe must defend effective multilateralism because it serves our interests and those of all who refuse to submit to the rule of force,” the French President summed it up in his Davos speech.
