French maritime robotics company Exail is set to deliver a new deep-diving autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to the French Navy to enhance the country’s seabed operations.
Capable of operating at depths of up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet), the AUV will support Paris’ efforts in seabed reconnaissance missions and underwater infrastructure monitoring.
The craft will be equipped with an inertial navigation system and acoustic sensors, and integrated with a remotely operated robotic component.
“We are extremely proud of this recognition of our technological expertise in seabed warfare, and to contribute to strengthening national sovereignty,” said Jérome Bendell, Managing Director of Exail.
France’s growing focus on seabed surveillance is a key priority included in its 2030 investment plan, which outlines Paris’ future developments in several industrial sectors.
The French Navy’s acquisition of the AUV is also part of a broader seabed warfare initiative aimed at safeguarding France’s sovereignty, security, and strategic economic interests.
Operations are for “developing knowledge, monitoring and taking action, with a range of uses including hydro-oceanographic operations, undersea action, and surveillance missions,” as stated in the Ministerial Strategy for Seabed Warfare.
