The Federal Government has announced plans to build modular solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,900 megawatts across the 19 northern states. This initiative aims to enhance the adoption of renewable energy and expand the national grid.

Additionally, the government aims to generate and distribute approximately 8,000 megawatts of electricity by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first term in 2027.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this announcement during the sixth edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series held on Thursday in Abuja.

Adelabu explained that each solar power station is expected to generate around 100 megawatts of electricity, which will help states achieve greater energy independence and lessen their dependence on the national grid.

He also mentioned that the government is actively seeking private investment to facilitate grid expansion and enhance electricity generation.

During the event aimed at updating the public and showcasing current achievements, the minister highlighted Nigeria’s potential for utility-scale solar power generation, given the country’s abundant sunshine.

He stated, “In addition to our ongoing initiatives, private investors such as Sun Africa Energy and Skipper Electric are eager to invest in Nigeria’s power sector, focusing on renewable energy generation and grid expansion. Currently, our grid relies on just two sources of power: hydropower and gas-powered plants.

“However, with the ample sunshine available in Nigeria, there is no reason we cannot develop utility-scale solar power generation. Two companies have already shown interest in this area, and discussions are progressing very well.

“First, Sun Africa plans to introduce approximately 1,000MW of solar energy to support the efforts of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company at various locations. This energy will be directly integrated into the grid.”

“First on the list is Sun Africa, which plans to introduce approximately 1,000 MW of solar energy to support the initiatives of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company at their various sites. This energy will be directly integrated into the grid, enhancing our solar power capacity.”
