The Federal Government has momentarily inaugurated Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, which spans an impressive 47 kilometers, extending from the junction of Ahmadu Bello Way to the Eleko village junction in Lagos State. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, proclaimed the opening of this vital coastal route during a ceremonial gathering in Lagos, attended by esteemed government officials, revered traditional rulers, and other significant stakeholders.

He conveyed to the assembly that the unveiling of this highway will provide solace to travelers and is anticipated to alleviate the grueling driving ordeal for users along the Lekki-Ajah corridor.

With the opening of Section 1 of the grand roadway project, Umahi proclaimed that the Federal Government has honored its commitment to the populace.

Just last month, during a diligent inspection tour of the coastal highway project, the Minister assured that Section 1 would be finalized and accessible to traffic between December 12 and 17, 2025.

The erstwhile governor of Ebonyi State indicated that April 2026 has been earmarked for the full completion of Section 1. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is projected to traverse nine coastal states across the nation.

It will commence in Lagos and culminate in Cross River, while also traversing the states of Edo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Bayelsa, and Ogun.

Envisioned to stretch a total of around 700 kilometers, the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway is an ambitious project.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) granted approval for the road’s construction in February 2024, with construction activities commencing on the Lagos segment the subsequent month.

In May 2024, President Bola Tinubu officially launched the multimillion-naira initiative, which carries a staggering cost of N4bn per kilometer.

Umahi remarked during an April 2024 appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief that this road, which ignited controversy regarding its costs and the awarding of the contract, is slated for completion within an eight-year time frame.
