The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has urged the federal government to execute only people-centred infrastructure in the face of the current inflation in the country.

The immediate president of NIQS, Michael Shonubi, in an interview, said the paucity of funds has made it necessary for the government to imbibe integrated cost management to create an impact in the lives of citizens.

He said, “Everywhere you go in Nigeria, there is a complaint about either lack of or decaying infrastructure. Unfortunately, because of the economic downturn which has already affected the value of the naira against foreign currency, we also have a shortage of funds to be able to undertake a complete and holistic revamp of our infrastructure.

“Now, it is our collective belief in the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) that whatever money, whatever finances, whatever funds that are available for any project, we have to make sure that the people should get value for the money.”

He said infrastructure projects shouldn’t just be about the cost but about the value and the benefits the people would get.

Also, Prof.Charles Egbu, who spoke on the topic ‘Integrated Cost Management Solutions for Sustainable Infrastructure Projects Delivery: A Key to National Economic Development’ at the NIQS 30th Biennial Conference, said the quantity surveyor in the modern society should provide cost management solutions that meet the needs of the client and should be done within a sustainable environment where everyone is planned for in the infrastructure projects being executed
