The federal government has embarked on an ambitious project to construct over 10,000 exquisite housing units across 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of its dedicated mission to alleviate the housing shortfall plaguing the nation.

Additionally, it has successfully garnered more than ₦70 billion in private investment through collaborations known as Public-Private Partnerships, which has simultaneously generated over 250,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for skilled Nigerian artisans.

Architect Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, unveiled these developments  recently during the Southwest Housing and Construction Exhibition (SWHCET ’25), held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta. This year’s theme centered on “Renewed Hope Housing: Accelerating Regional Growth.”

The initiative also included the inauguration of the Construction Artisan Training School, offering complimentary training for artisans.

Dangiwa announced that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu is committed to reimagining housing not merely as a social service but as a formidable catalyst for economic transformation and inclusive advancement. He emphasized that his ministry has been working passionately to unlock housing’s formidable potential as a catalyst for jobs, industry, and prosperity, positively impacting lives and revitalizing communities across the nation.

He elaborated, “Our flagship initiative, the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, is being implemented through a meticulously structured three-tier approach. The first tier consists of the Renewed Hope Cities, vast, masterfully designed communities comprising at least 1,000 units, complete with schools, hospitals, markets, and lush green spaces.

“The second tier involves the Renewed Hope Estates; 250-unit developments situated in every state capital, targeting middle-income Nigerians, including civil servants, traders, and educators. The third tier consists of the Renewed Hope Social Housing Estates; 100-unit projects designed for each Local Government Area, specifically aimed at supporting the poorest and most vulnerable populations.”

“Throughout Nigeria, we have initiated the construction of over 10,000 housing units in 17 states and the FCT, generating more than 250,000 direct and indirect jobs, while attracting in excess of ₦70 billion in private investment through Public-Private Partnerships.”

“Every home we construct translates into work opportunities for artisans. Each block laid translates into income for suppliers. Every completed community fosters opportunity, dignity, and growth for the citizens of Nigeria.

“The Southwest region has emerged as a pioneering leader in transforming the Renewed Hope vision into concrete achievements. In Lagos, we are in the process of developing the 2,000-unit Renewed Hope City at Ibeju-Lekki, a landmark endeavor aimed at enhancing affordable housing along the Lekki industrial corridor, in close proximity to the Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery. This development will relieve pressure on the mainland, generate thousands of jobs, and pave the way for new avenues of urban and industrial expansion.

“To ensure houses are built sustainably, we must also cultivate the industries that provide the necessary materials. This is the reason the Ministry is establishing Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs across each of the six geopolitical zones, with the goal of localizing production, diminishing import reliance, reducing costs, and generating employment.”
