Satoshi Nakamoto continues to fascinate the crypto market, as nobody knows his identity. A recent FBI FOIA response started another speculation about Nakamoto’s identity.

1/Sigh, this just in from the FBI, which asserts that Satoshi Nakamoto, the apocryphal creator of Bitcoin, is a “third party individual,” and can neither confirm or deny the existence of any records on this person. Typically this is their answer for requests re: non-US persons. pic.twitter.com/oFVB4hHJcJ

The Special FOIA Request

3/For FOIA nerds, this request was made via their “All other subjects” pathway, not the “Deceased Individuals” form. I submitted as a broad general subject request, with full context, so it is the bureau and not me that is asserting that this is an individual. Interesting.

A FOIA request was submitted by an investigative journalist Dave Troy through the FBI’s “All other subjects” pathway. As a result, Satoshi Nakamoto was treated as an individual rather than a collective entity, raising eyebrows within the crypto community.

Implications of the FBI’s Response

The bureau called Nakamoto a “third-party individual” and a non-U.S. person. This has started debates about whether Satoshi Nakamoto is one person or a group.
