The European Commission is overhauling its funding strategy for Tunisia after a Guardian investigation revealed abuses by the country’s EU-funded security forces, including sexual violence against migrants. According to reports, EU officials are deliberating on human rights-related conditions that Tunis must meet to qualify for payments, amounting to tens of millions of pounds, over the next three years. This development is believed to be a subtle admission by the EU to allegations that a 2023 EU-Tunisia deal prioritized migration control over human rights. Prior to this revelation, the EU denied every accusation of wrongdoing, stating that its partnership with Tunis adheres to human rights principles. The move may influence EU agreements with other nations, such as Egypt and Mauritania, as concerns over human rights violations in migration-related deals grow.
