The Ethiopian prime minister, who arrived in Russia yesterday for the 16th BRICS Summit noted that BRICS can become a force en route to forging a more just world order.
As reported by the Russian newspaper, Sputnik, the Ethiopian PM, made the remark at the expanded BRICS Summit’s meeting in Russia’s Kazan on Wednesday.
“I see a tremendous opportunity in BRICS, with its collective voice representing nearly half of the global population and over a third of the global GDP, BRICS has the potential to be a transformative force of a more equitable world order,” the Prime Minister stated.
“The imbalance in our economic framework globally leads to inequality, inflation and unemployment. A collective effort on our part is therefore required – more than ever.
Calls to solve climate problems, to finance these solutions – they are not being heeded, even though the crisis is getting worse. Faced with these challenges, I see significant opportunities here within BRICS,” he added.
The Ethiopian prime minister also advocated for BRICS’ economic collaboration across all sectors, including energy and tourism, as well as in the development of artificial intelligence.
“Our partnership should not only address today’s challenges, it should lay the foundations for achieving a more equitable and inclusive multilateral world,” he said.
“The consideration of applications for membership of BRICS and the New Development Bank will create a system of alternative financing for infrastructure projects that are important for development. I believe that BRICS is in a unique position to pursue equitable multilateralism,” he continued.
According to the prime minister, Ethiopia believes that BRICS group of nations would fully support Africa’s attempts to restructure the UN and provide African nations a seat on the Security Council.
“Ethiopia would like to emphasize that reforming the UN Security Council system deserves our attention. We believe that the countries that are represented at this summit will address the issue of Africa’s representation in the UN Security Council on a parity basis, and this is an all-African position.
And we are not just talking about representation here, we are talking about fairness, equality. Thus, all countries can make their contribution to global governance,” Abiy Ahmed noted
“We are committed to food security. We will become the largest producer of cereals due to our productivity,” the prime minister said, noting that the East African country is ready to become a guarantor of food security through its growing grain production.
Ethiopia and the BRICS group
Ethiopia formally joined BRICS on the first day of the year, after it was agreed upon by the relevant stakeholders of the group during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg in August.
Later in June, it was reported that the Foreign Ministers of Ethiopia and Russia, Taye Atske Selassie and Sergey Lavrov met at the BRICS and UN Security Council to discuss the possibility of bolstering the economic relationship between both countries.
There was also a confidential discussion on collaborating with foreign groups during the meeting by both ministers.
In addition to talking about challenges across Africa, the ministers focused especially on the Horn of Africa crisis.
Originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS group has been actively working to alter the global economic order.
The group’s main goal is to expand its economic power in order to control the world market. In order to do this, the organization first brought together the previously listed founding members, who all have a similar economic philosophy, and then added additional members.
