Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, has called on Tigrayans to publicly nominate a new regional leader in a bid to ease tensions and prevent renewed conflict. This follows deepening divisions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which recently saw armed supporters of party leader Debretsion Gebremichael seize key towns in the region, forcing interim President Getachew Reda to flee to Addis Ababa. The TPLF criticized Abiy’s move. According to Amanuel Assefa, the party’s deputy chair, the TPLF reserves the right to nominate a candidate for the position under the terms of the 2022 peace deal.
