In a landmark move poised to redefine agricultural transformation across Africa, Ethio Telecom and the Oromia Regional State Agriculture Bureau have signed an agreement to deploy a Big Data–powered Integrated Agriculture Value Chain Platform, the first of its kind in the region.

This ambitious digital solution will serve as a central nervous system for Oromia’s vast agricultural ecosystem, connecting farmers, cooperatives, suppliers, agribusinesses, and retailers through a unified data infrastructure. By enabling real-time coordination, data analysis, and digital transactions, the platform is expected to significantly enhance productivity, efficiency, traceability, and market access across Ethiopia’s largest regional economy.

“We are committed to going beyond connectivity,” said a senior representative from Ethio Telecom. “This platform is a reflection of our growing role in national development—empowering institutions with scalable digital infrastructure that improves livelihoods, boosts resilience, and accelerates transformation.”

Powered by Tele Cloud, the platform will integrate data from IoT devices, satellite imagery, remote sensing technologies, and field-level insights, allowing stakeholders to:

  • Optimize crop yields and input usage
  • Predict supply-demand gaps
  • Digitize transactions across the value chain
  • Monitor pests, diseases, and weather events in real-time
  • Strengthen market linkages between rural producers and buyers

Initially rolled out in selected woredas (districts), the system will scale across Oromia in phases, serving as a model for nationwide replication. The project reinforces Ethiopia’s broader Digital Ethiopia 2025 vision and demonstrates the power of telecom-led innovation in public-sector digitalization.

“This is not just a digital solution—it is a blueprint for agricultural transformation at scale,” said a spokesperson from the Oromia Agriculture Bureau. “It’s about empowering farmers, improving market intelligence, and unlocking new value through technology.”

Ethio Telecom will continue to expand its ecosystem of partnerships with regional and federal institutions, development partners, and international agencies to accelerate the adoption of digital solutions across Ethiopia’s key sectors.
