Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and Mr. Mohammed Assoweh, Director General of Djibouti Telecom, held a high-level strategic meeting in Addis Ababa to review their long-standing partnership and explore new opportunities for collaboration within the rapidly evolving East African digital ecosystem.
The discussions centered on accelerating the implementation of the previously agreed Horizon Fiber tripartite initiative—a strategic collaboration between Ethio telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel—and deepening cooperation across key areas such as international gateway partnerships, interconnectivity, mobile money, enterprise solutions, and roaming services. These efforts aim to strengthen regional digital integration and enhance the resilience of Africa’s connectivity infrastructure.
Frehiwot highlighted Ethio telecom’s bold three-year transformation roadmap, ‘NEXT HORIZON: Digital & Beyond 2028,’ which underscores the company’s commitment to building powerful partnerships that drive digital inclusion, innovation, and sustainable growth across the continent. She emphasized Ethiopia’s unmatched infrastructure potential and vast market size, along with the remarkable growth in customer base, expanding internet coverage, and the transformative impact of telebirr, the country’s flagship mobile money platform that continues to accelerate financial inclusion at scale.

Mr. Mohammed Assoweh reaffirmed Djibouti Telecom’s strong commitment to the partnership, describing it as “a model for strategic cooperation between African operators.” He underlined Djibouti Telecom’s capacity to support Ethiopia’s growing IGW demands and praised the rapid expansion of telebirr, identifying it as a promising foundation for future cross-border digital financial collaboration.
Both companies reiterated their shared vision of ensuring that the benefits of digital progress are accessible to citizens of both nations, reaffirming their roles as pioneering enablers of Africa’s digital future.
Following the meeting, the Djibouti Telecom delegation toured Ethio telecom’s Digital Experience Center, where they explored cutting-edge solutions in smart agriculture, e-education, and digital healthcare, showcasing the transformative potential of technology to drive inclusive socioeconomic development across the continent.
