Ethio telecom has expanded its national digital transformation agenda with the launch of new platforms under its ‘NEXT HORIZON: Digital & Beyond 2028’ strategy, reinforcing its ambition to drive digital inclusion, job creation, and inclusive economic growth across Ethiopia.
The strategy marks a shift beyond traditional connectivity, positioning the operator as a competitive provider of advanced digital solutions and telebirr-enabled financial services within Africa’s evolving digital landscape.
As part of this roadmap, Ethio telecom introduced teleStream, an internet-based content streaming platform, alongside a Zero-Touch Digital System that modernizes fixed broadband service delivery.
teleStream Enhances Ethiopia’s Digital Entertainment Landscape
Built on the company’s fiber, 4G, and 5G infrastructure, and powered by telecloud and telebirr integration, teleStream offers more than 60 live TV channels and over 350 video-on-demand titles. The service delivers high-quality, low-latency streaming via home broadband Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for satellite dishes and minimizing weather-related disruptions.
Accessible through fixed broadband or SIM cards using a set-top box, teleStream transforms non-smart TVs into smart entertainment hubs, expanding digital access to households nationwide.
Beyond entertainment, the platform creates opportunities for media houses, content creators, advertisers, and institutions by offering a locally hosted distribution system that reduces reliance on foreign satellite infrastructure and lowers associated costs.
For households, teleStream provides seamless installation, parental controls, and integrated telebirr payments. Businesses, hotels, and guest houses benefit from centralized, high-quality content delivery without maintaining satellite systems. Educational, health, and government institutions can also leverage the platform to distribute learning materials and public information.
The initiative further supports smart city development and digital sovereignty by hosting content locally and reducing visual clutter from satellite dishes.
Zero-Touch Broadband Modernization
Ethio telecom has also strengthened its fixed broadband infrastructure, deploying over 14,413 kilometers of metro fiber and enabling capacity for 1.2 million customers. More than 79,000 users have already migrated from copper to fiber networks.
The introduction of fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) enhances in-home connectivity, supporting high-bandwidth applications such as cloud computing, AI, and smart home technologies.
Through its Zero-Touch Digital System, customers can request services, report faults, and complete payments digitally via the telebirr SuperApp. Access requires a Fayda digital ID and telebirr account, reflecting the company’s push toward fully automated service delivery.
Together, teleStream and advanced broadband upgrades reinforce Ethiopia’s Digital Ethiopia 2030 vision, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and technology-driven economy.
