Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) officially launched 5G mobile services on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.

The service is now available through four major mobile network operators—Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, and Telecom Egypt—who have collectively invested USD 2.7 billion in 5G spectrum and licenses since 2019.

Telecom Egypt secured its 5G license in January 2024 while Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and e& Egypt all received licenses in October 2024.

Hazem Metwally, CEO of e& Egypt; Mohamed Nasr, CEO of Telecom Egypt; Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Egypt; Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of NTRA; Yasser Shaker, CEO of Orange Egypt; Mohamed Abdallah, CEO of Vodafone Egypt and Vodacom International Markets attended the 5G launch event at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza.

With ultra-fast speeds and low latency, 5G is expected to drive innovation and power a wide range of next-generation applications, from smart cities and advanced healthcare systems to industrial automation. It also allows for the simultaneous connection and control of multiple devices, a core requirement for modern digital infrastructure.

In an earlier statement in October 2024, Talaat highlighted that 5G would be a catalyst for economic growth, accelerate digital transformation, and improve Egypt’s standing in global ICT indices.

Shamroukh emphasized that 5G will enhance user experience (UX), enable smart city applications, and support technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things, driving digital economy growth and investment.

Nasr noted that Telecom Egypt’s investments exceeded EGP 35 billion in 2024, reflecting its commitment to developing resilient infrastructure, while Shaker noted that Orange is among the first global telecom operators to roll out 5G in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Abdallah praised the political leadership for its sustained backing of the ICT sector. He noted the importance of 5G in response to the rising digital awareness among Egyptians. Metwally echoed this sentiment, adding that e& Egypt is ready to invest approximately EGP 18 billion in its technological infrastructure in 2025 to offer 5G services efficiently.

With this launch, Egypt becomes the second North African country to launch 5G following the launch of 5G services in Tunisia in February 2025.
