Egypt has successfully integrated 2,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, including solar and wind power, into its national grid to boost its electricity supply.
This was disclosed by the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, stating that this addition will enhance Egypt’s capacity to meet rising power demands while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
According to the Ministry, the country reduced its fuel consumption in June from an initially planned 142 million cubic metres of gas equivalent to approximately 127 million cubic metres, saving around 12% of fuel usage.
The ministry added that the project will enable it achieve monthly savings estimated at $23.6 million.
In addition, these savings stem from strategic shifts toward solar and wind power, which lower operational costs and environmental impact.
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy aims to reach 30% of the power mix from renewables by 2030, per Enerdata’s analysis.
Egypt’s electricity demand
In July, Egypt’s national grid faced its highest-ever electricity demand, peaking at 39,400 MW amid a severe heatwave.
The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy confirmed this, attributing the surge to increased air conditioning use as temperatures soared to real-feel levels of 43°C to 45°C in northern regions.
A Daily News Egypt report notes that this load exceeded the previous year’s peak by 1,400 MW, showing the strain on infrastructure.
The grid managed this historic demand through a year-long urgent plan, as disclosed by the ministry.
The initiative, as revealed by the ministry, is focused on boosting operational efficiency, implementing rigorous maintenance programs that meet global standards, and enhancing overall performance.
In addition, the ministry further explained that these efforts prevented blackouts, with them coordinating closely to secure supplies ahead of summer peaks.
