DWS notes report on findings of ARV medical waste traces in water and is giving it necessary attention.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has noted media reports on a study undertaken by the University of North West and its findings of traces of anti-retroviral (ARV) medicines in water resources.
As indicated in the media reports, the ARVs appear to be entering the water resources through municipal wastewater treatment systems, which were usually not designed to remove such chemicals.

The Department will engage the university on the study findings and associated possible impacts. This will be done in conjunction with Water Research Commission and the Department of Health.
