DTB and Safaricom Partner to Launch ‘Taasi’ Till Loans for MSMEs

Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has partnered with Safaricom PLC to launch Taasi Till Loans, a short-term credit facility tailored to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that operate Safaricom Lipa na M-Pesa tills.

The initiative seeks to address the financing gap faced by small businesses by offering fast and flexible loans through mobile money platforms.

Over 23,000 Merchants Already Benefiting

The product allows till-owning merchants to borrow up to KSh250,000, with a repayment period of 14 days. During its pilot phase, the service attracted over 23,000 merchants across the country, with more than KSh135 million disbursed. The average loan per customer was KSh17,500, highlighting the product’s alignment with the day-to-day cash flow needs of small businesses.

According to Murali Natarajan, DTB’s Managing Director and CEO, the bank is committed to strengthening MSMEs, which form the backbone of Kenya’s economy.

“Through this partnership, we aim to extend a much-needed credit line to these small businesses, which often need quick and short-term credit as the lifeline of their daily operations,” he said.

Driving Economic Growth Through Technology

Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom Group CEO, emphasized that the partnership leverages mobile technology to make business financing more accessible and efficient.

“Businesses play a pivotal role in Kenya’s economy. Taasi will offer convenience and access to credit, allowing MSMEs to focus on scaling their operations,” said Dr. Ndegwa.

The product is part of DTB’s broader strategy to deepen financial inclusion through digital innovation.

Finally,  combining DTB’s financial expertise with Safaricom’s mobile infrastructure, the two institutions aim to empower entrepreneurs and fuel economic growth.
