The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has confirmed that talks are still ongoing with satellite company Monacosat over launching a satellite to boost the country’s connectivity.

According to Ecofin Agency, President Félix Tshisekedi met with Jean-Philippe Anvam, a representative of the Monaco-based firm, to review the DRC’s national telecom satellite project.

Anvam said the launch of a Congolese satellite would deliver high-speed internet, particularly in remote areas where infrastructure is scarce.

Financing could come from Nigeria’s Fidelity Bank, which is exploring entry into the DRC market.

However, a timeline has yet to be established, and no concrete details have yet been annoucned in regards to the project.

The DRC government signed an MoU with Monacosat in November 2024 to collaborate on a satellite project aimed at strengthening national connectivity and ultimately achieving universal coverage.

Monacosat is a joint venture between Pricipality of Monaco, represented by SSI-Monaco (Space Systems International – Monaco) and the government of Turkemenistan.

According to the International Telecommunication Union, 2G services covered 75% of the population in 2023, while only 45% had access to 4G. Overall internet penetration stood at just 30% across the country’s 102.3 million people, according to GSMA data.
