The Cairo-based gallery Gypsum is presenting a solo stand in Art Basel Miami Beach’s Positions sector featuring textile pieces by Dina Danish, an Egyptian artist now based in Amsterdam who worked with a team of artisans to create a series of appliqué tapestries that document important events from the past few years. The most recognisable scene on the stand for Americans is likely By a Fraction (Or the Bloody Ear) (2024), which depicts the moments after the assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump during a campaign rally in July.
“It’s an event that needs to be documented, because it’s a pivotal moment that affected the future,” Danish says, adding that “it’s a tricky one to make because it can easily become a propaganda piece”. The work was still available on Thursday morning, and tapestries in the booth are priced between $10,000 and $15,000 each.
