Derived from a 2013 painting titled “The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born,” this print might not endure much longer. It’s part of a series inspired by Ayi Kwei Armah’s 1968 debut novel. Armah’s narrative, focused on a working-class man in post-colonial Ghana, forms the thematic backdrop for Akunyili Crosby’s eleven paintings. These artworks explore post-colonial African life, depicting young figures in intricate interiors filled with cultural symbols and everyday items.

In “The Beautyful Ones” May Have Arrived, viewers encounter a meticulously crafted scene. A woman sits on a rug beside a low table adorned with a kerosene lantern, bowls, and plates. This screenprint impeccably preserves the artist’s signature style, which features detailed frontal portraits, elaborate clothing, and richly ornamented settings. What sets this piece apart is the artist’s subtle shift from painting to printmaking, which emphasizes her willingness to explore new creative avenues.

The print not only mirrors the essence of the original painting but also elevates it through the intricate process of screenprinting. Akunyili Crosby carefully replicates each color and every minute detail, thus demonstrating her unwavering dedication to her craft. This limited edition is a testament to her ability to balance continuity. She embraces new techniques and mediums as she preserves the thematic richness of her earlier works with innovation,

As art enthusiasts engage with” Coming Back to See Through, Again, “they delve into the nuanced layers of post-colonial African life. They also experience the intricacies encapsulated in every brushstroke and hue. This exhibition milestone in Akunyili Crosby’s artistic journey offers viewers a unique opportunity to witness the seamless fusion of tradition and experimentation. The exhibition is on till October 28th and will feature a musical performance by  Gerald Eze. Check out this fantastic collection of prints at David Zwirner Gallery today.
