The Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme has seen significant progress, as shared by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa. He characterized this program as essential for transforming lives, generating employment, and revitalizing communities.

During a two-day interactive event organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation at Arewa House in Kaduna, Dangiwa emphasized the government’s dedication to utilizing housing as a means for economic advancement and social change within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We’re not merely constructing houses; we are restoring lives, enhancing dignity, and establishing a groundwork for a more secure and thriving North,” he asserted.

As per the minister, the Ministry’s comprehensive housing plan is transforming the urban environment of the region, with 6,112 homes being built at present. This includes the development of Renewed Hope City in Karsana, FCT, comprising 3,112 units, a 1,500-unit project in Kano, and 250 additional units in Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, Benue, and Nasarawa States.

Each estate is equipped with essential infrastructure, including roads, water supply, solar lighting, and fundamental social amenities.

Dangiwa noted that the Ministry is also advancing the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, which aims to provide 100 affordable homes in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

These housing efforts have generated over 152,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, throughout the North. The minister highlighted that many local tradespeople and youths are now earning as much as N150,000 monthly, and he added that the Ministry is also working on establishing manufacturing hubs for building materials to help lower construction costs and enhance local industry.

He also announced the initiation of a Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict (RSPIC), a humanitarian effort focused on assisting victims of terrorism and banditry. The pilot project is currently taking place in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, which was affected by a military airstrike in December 2023, aiming to provide 252 new homes in seven northern states, including Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Benue, and Sokoto.

“This represents housing as a form of healing, supporting families impacted by conflict to regain stability and hope,” Dangiwa remarked.

Regarding urban renewal, the Minister stated that over 150 slum upgrade projects have been finalized, with more than 100 still in progress in significant areas such as Tudun Wada in Sokoto, Yankaba in Kano, and Tunga in Niger State.

Dangiwa also shared plans to extend the programme to additional northern states, with new housing developments, the implementation of the 774-LGA social housing initiative, and improved access to affordable mortgages and rent-to-own options. There are also intentions to create more building material hubs to enhance affordability and promote self-sufficiency.

“This initiative encompasses more than just infrastructure. It signifies a restoration of trust in the government and serves as a tangible example of how President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is effecting genuine change,” the minister concluded.
