After more than a decade with the Portland Trail Blazers, Damian Lillard believes now is the right time for a change and he has submitted a trade request.
The point guard has never come close to winning an NBA title and, now aged 32, time is running out.
The fact that the Trail Blazers just drafted another point guard in Scoot Henderson has reportedly frustrated Lillard and, if the team are building for the future, he wants to go elsewhere to challenge immediately.
The reaction to Damian Lillard’s trade request
The general reaction to the news that Damian Lillard wants a move has been positive, with most fans and pundits agreeing that he deserves an opportunity to challenge for a title.
Even though he doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, meaning the Trail Blazers could place the star player anywhere, most believe that they will do right by him given his loyalty to the franchise since being drafted sixth overall in 2012.
But, there are some fans who have voiced their displeasure with the 32-year-old’s plan to leave.
“It’s in my blood to take the high road,” Lillard stated on social media in response to a report about the negative reaction.
“I’d love to hear what fans are turning on.
“Have I mislead them? Or anyone? Fill me in.”
Where will Damien Lillard land?
The favorite to acquire Lillard is the Miami Heat, who would pair him with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
However, the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers have all been mentioned as options too.
