The Czech Republic will officially acquire two Brazilian-made Embraer C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft.

Czech Minister of Defense Jana Černochová announced this during a parliamentary session in early October, which comes 12 months after the country selected the Brazilian manufacturer’s aircraft as the most suitable solution for its army’s needs.

According to Černochová, the army has a long-term need to “strengthen its ability to transport heavier and bulkier loads over longer distances or to ensure the transport of people from crisis areas,” citing Afghanistan and Sudan.

The minister also mentioned that the deteriorating global security situation highlights the urgent need to acquire the aircraft.

Acquisition Details

The procurement of the two C-390s, plus additional equipment, is worth 11.3 billion Czech koruna ($491 million) excluding VAT.

An aerial firefighting system, in-flight refueling capabilities, an intensive care patient transport module, ground equipment, spare parts, and personnel training are included.

The contract also covers additional fuel tanks, a self-protection system for dangerous environments, a fuel dispensing system for Forward Arming and Refueling Points, improved passenger transport options, and a GPS repeater for special forces operations.

Delivery of the first aircraft will take place in 2025, while the second and final jet is set for either 2027 or 2028.

Czech Collaboration

Embraer also signed an Industrial Cooperation Agreement with Czechia’s defense ministry to strengthen the military’s capabilities and enhance the country’s economy, outlining collaboration with local companies and universities.

The agreement will increase the Czech aircraft maker Aero Vodochody’s production of C-390 components, such as the rear fuselage, the doors for paratroopers and crew, the emergency door and hatches, the cargo ramp, and the fixed leading edge.

“This strategic project has a positive impact on the sustainable development of the entire Czech aviation industry, which Aero represents,” Aero Vodochody Chairman and President Viktor Sotona said.

“The effect on employment, the development of innovations, know-how and the strengthening of our position on the global market is also positive,” he added.

State-owned maintenance, repair, and overhaul company LOM Praha will participate in a knowledge exchange to integrate itself with the C-390’s life cycle management.

Lastly, Embraer will also cooperate with Czech universities and research institutions on advanced aerospace projects.
