The federal government is anticipated to allocate approximately N180.8 billion in electricity subsidies for power consumers in Bands ‘B’ to ‘E’, whose tariffs have been frozen since December 2022, according to information obtained by THISDAY on Friday.
Additionally, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed fines totaling around N8.3 billion on the 11 Distribution Companies (Discos) for overbilling their customers recently, mandating them to compensate the affected electricity consumers.
These details were outlined in the September 2024 Supplementary Order of the Multi-Year Tariff Order of 2024, released by the power sector regulator led by Sanusi Garba on Friday in Abuja.
A review by THISDAY of the orders revealed that Abuja Disco faced the largest fine at N1.69 billion, followed closely by Eko Disco with N1.41 billion, while Ikeja Disco was also directed by NERC to pay N1.41 billion for the violation.
