In the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, young women, like Esther Abumba, are turning to slam poetry to express their pain and resilience amid ongoing conflict. Slam poetry offers a platform for Congolese youth to process trauma, particularly around themes of war, violence, and injustice. Esther believes that this art form can bring about societal change, especially regarding the portrayal of Congolese women, who have long been seen as victims. She calls on women to rewrite their own narratives, emphasizing their strength and capacity for rebellion, not just suffering.
