Chinese President to Meet With African Leaders at Summit

With the BRICS bloc meeting in full next week, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet with African leaders at the annual summit. Indeed, the event is set to feature Africa’s heads of state meeting with China to discuss advanced cooperation between the two. 

Reuters reported the meetings were set to take place amid a push for “cooperation in a new era,” according to China’s ambassador. Specifically, the meeting is set to take place on the final day of the summit. Ultimately featuring the involvement of more than 70 countries.

China and Africa to Discuss Increased Cooperation at BRICS Summit

The upcoming BRICS summit is poised to be its most important. Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are set to discuss ideas that could be crucial to the alliance’s growth. Specifically, with a focus on currency usage and expansion, setting the trajectory for the bloc in the coming years. 

Now it has been reported that during the BRICS event, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet with African leaders on the final day of the summit. Moreover, the meeting was set aside for discussions of increased “China-Africa cooperation,” according to China’s ambassador. Moreover, Xi stated, “Initiatives will be in line with the needs of Arica’s economic restructuring and upgrading.”

The final day of the summit has reportedly been set aside to involve all “friends” of BRICS. Indeed, more than 70 countries will have that date to convene on matters related to the economic alliance. A development that will be incredibly important for countries seeking entry into the bloc. 

On Tuesday, Xi will also visit South African President Cyril Ramaphosa before his travel to Johannesburg for the summit. This visit will mark the fifth time that the Chinese President has visited South Africa since becoming president in 2013. Additionally, China’s meeting with African leaders comes a month after the Russia-Africa summit was held in St. Petersburg.
