The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Y-20 multi-role transporter, officially named Kunpeng in honour of a mythical Chinese bird and nicknamed “Chubby Girl” because of its appearance has arrived South Africa to participate in the Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (AAD 2024.)

A Y-20 transport aircraft of PLAAF had arrived at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in South Africa on the 13th September. The aircraft had transported a Z-10ME attack helicopter, and other Chinese contingents and is expected to participate in the 2024 African Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (AAD Exhibition).

The aircraft flew into Africa through Yemen, down to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Malawi. China is hoping to expand its geopolitical ties into Africa in particular, where the US has suffered a series of steps back in terms of military presence.

The Y-20 can carry up to 66 tons of cargo, making it one of the largest transport aircraft in the world. It has a range of approximately 7,800 kilometers when fully loaded, allowing it to operate over vast distances without refueling. The aircraft can transport a variety of military equipment, including tanks, helicopters, and other vehicles, as well as personnel.

Equipped with modern avionics and a glass cockpit, the Y-20 offers enhanced operational capabilities and safety.

The Y-20 is said to have a 4,850 mile (4,200 nautical miles) range carrying 40 tons, shrinking to 2,800 miles (2,400 nautical miles) when fully laden.

Despite its size, the Y-20 is known for its agility, capable of performing complex maneuvers such as large angle ascension and dive, large slope turning, and fast landing.

Last week, the aircraft was at the El Alamein International Airport for the Egypt International Airshow, where it made a significant impact, showcasing its agility and maneuverability in its first overseas flight performance. The Y-20 Chinese transport aircraft on Tuesday made a symbolic flight above the pyramids alongside six J-10 Chinese fighter jets.

Several countries have shown interest in China’s Y-20 transport aircraft. Notably, Venezuela and several African countries are considered potential buyers. The Y-20 has also been involved in various international missions, including delivering Chinese troops to Tanzania for a joint counterterrorism exercise and transporting the FK-3 missile system to Serbia.
