The family of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a Lagos hospital of medical negligence following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
The toddler died on Wednesday after a short illness, leaving the family devastated. Nkanu was admitted to Euracare Hospital in Lagos, where he passed away less than 24 hours after arrival.

Allegations of Medical Failures
Members of Adichie’s family have raised serious concerns about the care Nkanu received.
In an interview with Nigerian broadcaster Arise TV, Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr Anthea Nwandu, alleged a series of failures that she said contributed to the child’s death.
Dr Nwandu claimed that medical staff denied Nkanu adequate oxygen, left him unattended, and transported him in a manner that did not meet standard medical practice.
She also alleged that excessive sedation caused the toddler to suffer a heart attack, resulting in brain injury due to oxygen deprivation.
According to Dr Nwandu, Euracare’s medical director later told Adichie that her son had received too much sedation.
Similar allegations appeared in a private message written by Adichie that was later leaked online.
Family Calls for Accountability
Adichie’s spokesperson, Omawumi Ogbe, confirmed the authenticity of the message but said it was intended only for close family and friends.
While the family expressed sadness that such a deeply personal account of grief and trauma was leaked, Ogbe said the details highlight devastating clinical failures the family is now forced to confront.
She added that the family hopes the focus remains on accountability and the truth surrounding the child’s death.
Nkanu was one of twin boys Adichie shares with her husband, Dr Ivara Esege. The twins were born via surrogate in 2024.
Hospital Denies Negligence
Euracare Hospital expressed its deepest sympathies to the family but rejected claims of improper care. In a statement, the hospital said reports circulating publicly contained inaccuracies.
According to Euracare, Nkanu arrived at the hospital in a critically ill condition after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres.
The hospital said staff immediately provided care in line with established clinical protocols and international standards, including the administration of sedation.
The hospital added that it worked closely with external medical teams at the family’s request and provided all necessary clinical support. Despite these efforts, the child died within a day of admission.
Euracare confirmed that a detailed internal investigation is underway and pledged to cooperate fully with regulatory authorities.
Government Investigation Launched
The Lagos State Government has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nkanu’s death.
Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health Matters, said the state maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence or professional misconduct.
She urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
A Broader Health System Challenge
The case has reignited public debate about Nigeria’s healthcare system, which faces severe staffing shortages.
Many doctors work long hours or juggle roles across public and private facilities, raising concerns about patient safety and oversight.
Nigeria’s president was among national leaders who publicly expressed condolences to Adichie and her family.
A Family in Mourning
Adichie, 48, is one of Africa’s most celebrated writers, known for works including Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and We Should All Be Feminists.
As investigations continue, the family says its priority remains truth, accountability, and justice for their son.
