A Global Recognition for Warmth and Hospitality

The annual Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards recognises destinations celebrated for their warmth, generosity, and vibrant atmosphere. The Mother City, situated in the Western Cape province near the Cape of Good Hope, has earned acclaim for its extraordinary blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and strong community spirit, drawing praise from travellers worldwide.

Perched between the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Table Mountain range, the city showcases one of the world’s most captivating urban landscapes, blending awe-inspiring natural beauty with a vibrant social scene that embodies its distinctive, cosmopolitan character.

Cape Town has been ranked the third friendliest city worldwide in Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards.

Community and Culture at the Heart of Friendliness

According to Condé Nast Traveler, Cape Town’s friendliness is deeply rooted in its community culture. The publication noted that a traditional South African barbecue, known locally as a “braai”, remains a defining social activity where families and friends gather to share stories, laughter, and food, a reflection of the city’s warm and inclusive spirit.

The magazine also acknowledged Cape Town’s complex past, stating that “while the complex history of apartheid means communities are far from perfect, many will agree that they also represent a hopeful symbol of resilience.”

Landmarks That Capture the Spirit of the City

The report highlighted some of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks, including Table Mountain, accessible via its world-famous cable car; the historic Bo-Kaap neighbourhood; the penguin colonies at Boulders Beach; and the scenic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, renowned for its indigenous flora and striking mountain backdrop.

These sites, along with the city’s rich cultural heritage, contribute significantly to its international appeal and enduring popularity among travellers.

Tourism Sector Welcomes Global Recognition

Cape Town’s steady rise in international hospitality rankings reinforces its position as one of Africa’s foremost tourist destinations.

The recognition underscores the city’s unique combination of scenic appeal, cultural diversity, and social resilience, qualities that continue to define its reputation on the global stage.
