Ottawa is supplying additional tactical equipment to Ukraine to defend its territories amidst Russia’s invasion, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair announced.

The donation will include 29 Nanuk weapon systems from the Canadian military’s stockpile and about 2,300 CRV7 rocket motors previously fitted in the nation’s CF-18 Hornet fighter jets.

The government wrote that the Nanuk systems can be mounted on different armored vehicle platforms for multiple mission types.

These capabilities were developed by Rheinmetall Canada and are still operational with the Canadian Army’s light armored fleet.

Meanwhile, the Defence Research and Development Canada and industry partner Magellan Aerospace have been testing the CRV7s to ensure their effectiveness.

Alongside these articles, Canada will send over 130,000 surplus rounds of small arms for Ukrainian troops.

Continuing Ukrainian Support

Blair revealed Ottawa’s new military aid for Ukraine during the 23rd Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

The UDCG is a multinational coalition of allies organized to support Ukraine’s military and humanitarian needs since Russia’s attack in 2022.

The latest meeting was hosted by US Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and joined by representatives from over 50 countries.

During the assembly, Blair confirmed Canada’s additional support for Ukraine, including the supply of 50 Armored Combat Support Vehicles in various configurations announced this month.

The country will also begin deliveries for the Canadian-made drones pledged in February, as well as the 10 rigid-hull multi-role boats in January.

“Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion is also a fight for democracy, freedom, and human rights,” Blair stated.

“We cannot let Ukraine down – because what happens in Ukraine will help determine the future of the international rules that keep us all safe. Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine until its victory.”
