Buuri MP Condemns Sale of Illicit Brew In Mt. Kenya Region

The mass burial of at least 17 people who died after consuming illicit brew in Kangai, Kirinyaga County has ended with leaders condemning the sale of illicit brew in the country.

Speaking during the event, Kirinyaga governor Hon Anne Waiguru has directed all operations in drinking joints be suspended to allow new issuance of licenses.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has ordered the immediate closure of all bars in the county following the death of 17 people who consumed ethanol-laced alcohol.

Waiguru emphasized that her administration will only issue business permits to bar owners who do not have a history of selling illicit liquor.

“We have reached our end. I want you to allow me and give me protection. Today I want to announce that all bars in the county have been closed, and a new process of verifying the licenses has begun. The county government has withdrawn all the licenses with immediate effect,” the governor stated.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has ordered the immediate closure of all bars in the county following the death of 17 people who consumed ethanol-laced alcohol.

Her sentiments were echoed by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who declared a fight against manufacturers, in the back of the killer brews“If you are a police officer in Kenya operating a bar, choose between owning the bars or your jobs, starting from Kirinyaga County. You cannot be flouting the law. It’s not right to do conflicting business,” said Gachagua.

Buuri Member of Parliament Hon Rindikiri Mugambi who also attended the mass burial has lauded the governors’ bold steps she has recently taken to curb this menace in her county.  “It is the high time to eradicate harmful brews and drugs in our communities. We applaud governor Anne for measures she has recently taken to end the sale of illicit brew in her county”
