The Government of Burkina Faso has taken significant steps to improve public transport. On Monday, August 11, 2025, Prime Minister Rimtalba Ouédraogo handed over the first batch of 155 buses from a total of 530 that will be deployed to facilitate the movement of students, workers, and the wider public.
The new fleet is part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s transport system and ease daily commutes across major cities and towns.
According to the Burkina Information Agency of Communication (BIR-C) of the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), the buses will be rolled out in phases, to improve access to schools, workplaces, and essential services while reducing transport costs for citizens.
The push for improved mobility comes alongside an ambitious agricultural campaign aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency. On May 22, 2025, in Bobo-Dioulasso, President Ibrahim Traoré handed over more than 104 billion CFA francs (approximately $172 million) worth of agricultural machinery and inputs to farmers. Funded entirely through internally generated revenues, the programme is designed to boost productivity, create rural jobs, and strengthen the agricultural sector.
The support package falls under two flagship government programmes, the Offensive agropastorale et halieutique 2023–2025 and the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production.
At the handover ceremony, President Traoré symbolically presented the keys to the new equipment to the Minister of State for Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié.
