Burkina Faso’s military junta has appointed Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo as the new prime minister, following the sudden dismissal of the former prime minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela, and the dissolution of the government. No official reason was given for Tambela’s removal, despite his leadership of three successive governments since Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s 2022 coup. Ouedraogo, a journalist and former director of the state television network, has been a key ally of Traoré since he seized power. He was initially appointed as Burkina Faso’s communications minister and government spokesperson after the coup and, despite multiple cabinet reshuffles, managed to retain the role. Burkina Faso has faced political instability since a January 2022 coup, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, deposed President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. Damiba was deposed eight months later by Traoré, who has since headed the Sahel country’s military government.
