Bupa Global Kenya has commissioned a solar-powered borehole in Garashi, Magarini Sub-County. The project will provide safe and reliable water to about 11,000 residents.

The initiative moves the company closer to its goal of reaching 100,000 people with clean water by 2028.

Supporting Communities with Sustainable Water

The Garashi Solar Borehole was funded by the Bupa Foundation. Kilifi County Government partnered in the project, while Griot Impact handled implementation.

The system includes a four-kilometre pipeline network. It supplies water to six collection points, including Garashi Centre, Kadongoleni, Mwangaza, Kalongoni, Garashi Health Centre, and Garashi Primary School.

As a result, several surrounding villages now have access to clean water.

Improving Health and Daily Life

For years, residents relied on seasonal rivers and shallow wells. However, these sources were often unsafe and unreliable.

The new borehole provides a stable and safe alternative. It improves sanitation and health outcomes. In addition, it reduces the time spent collecting water, especially for women and girls.

Boosting Schools and Healthcare Services

The project directly supports Garashi Primary School, which serves about 710 pupils. It also benefits Garashi Health Centre, a key provider of primary healthcare in the area.

Clean water will strengthen hygiene in schools and improve infection control at the health facility. Previously, the health centre relied on costly water deliveries.

Strengthening Community Ownership

Bupa Global Kenya combined funding with hands-on support from its team. This approach focuses on long-term community impact rather than one-off donations.

Griot Impact will manage maintenance through a structured programme. Meanwhile, local residents will receive training to run and maintain the system.

Consequently, the project promotes long-term sustainability and community ownership.

Commitment to Long-Term Impact

Bupa Global Kenya CEO Uditha Jayaratne said the project reflects the organisation’s long-term commitment to community wellbeing.

He noted that the Garashi borehole builds on three earlier projects in Kilifi County. Together, these projects already serve over 33,000 residents.

Moreover, the company continues to expand its presence in Kenya as a key hub for its Africa operations. It also plans to scale preventative health initiatives through community programmes.
