Made using a base of tamarind juice, tomatoes, and a unique blend of spices like cumin, pepper, and curry leaves, it is served hot over steamed rice or enjoyed as a flavourful broth. Delving into the same, Bhagyashree, who regularly shares essential health and fitness tips with her followers, recently took to Instagram to share why rasam is “soup for the soul”.

The actor added that with rasam’s main ingredients being tomatoes, tamarind, bay leaves, curcumin, and a host of spices, it is excellent for your gut and solves most digestive issues. “For those unversed, rasam has a host of nutrients. It has vitamins A, C, B1 and B3, iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, zinc, and copper. With so many nutrients, it is a must-have for everyone,” she said.
She concluded by saying that this dish can be savoured by during at least one meal through the monsoons.
Nupuur Patil, a nutritionist, agreed that rasam offers several health benefits due to its nutritious ingredients and preparation method.
*Digestive health: Rasam contains tamarind, which aids digestion and helps alleviate digestive issues like bloating and gas.
*Immune system support: The spices and herbs in rasam, such as turmeric, cumin, and black pepper, have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can support the immune system.

While rasam is generally a healthy dish with many benefits, there are certain groups of people who should be cautious or avoid it, Patil said.
*Individuals with tamarind allergies: Tamarind is a key ingredient in rasam, and people with tamarind allergies should avoid consuming it.
*High sodium intake concerns: Some recipes for rasam may contain a higher amount of salt. Individuals with hypertension or sodium sensitivity should consume it in moderation or adjust the salt content.
*Acid reflux or heartburn: The tangy nature of rasam may aggravate acid reflux or heartburn in some individuals. If you have these conditions, it’s best to consume rasam in moderation or avoid it if it triggers discomfort.
*Personal dietary restrictions: Rasam can be customised with various ingredients, so it’s essential to consider individual dietary restrictions or sensitivities when preparing or consuming it. For example, those on specific diets (ex, low-carb or vegan) may need to adjust the recipe accordingly.
“As with any food, moderation and a well-balanced diet are key to enjoying the benefits of rasam while being mindful of individual health concerns. If you have specific health conditions or concerns, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian,” the nutritionist said.
