Tampa Bay Buccaneers have competition for their quarterback role this season, and that is just one of Baker Mayfield‘s worries as he may also face a court battle.
The NFL quarterback joined his wife in filing a court petition in Texas regarding a 12 million dollar investment, with attorneys requesting that defendants hand over financial records.
The action is against six companies, including two, Camwood Capital Management Group LLC and Camwood Ventures LP, which were founded by Mayfield‘s father, James.
Baker Mayfield’s court filing
The filing is not formally considered a lawsuit, but the petition does request access to information.
“Petitioners simply do not know if their money has been properly and competently invested, has been stolen or otherwise misappropriated, or something in between,” the document states, according to reports from KXAN.
“It is too early to know whether a suit is likely or even anticipated.
“At this time, petitioners have been deprived the information and documents needed to analyze whether their assets have been misappropriated.
“On information and belief, a substantial sum of petitioners’ assets were transferred out of petitioners’ personal accounts to [Texas Contract Manufacturing Group], potentially at the direction and supervision of Camwood Group and/or Camwood Ventures, and were used by TCMG to fund certain investments, make certain acquisitions, or to fund certain loans.
“Other of petitioners’ assets were transferred directly to Camwood Ventures and invested in various entities on behalf of petitioners.”
On-the field-concerns for Baker Mayfield
Besides that potential financial headache, there are also on-the field-concerns for Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield had a promising start to his NFL career, leading the Cleveland Browns to their first winning season in 18 years in 2018.
However, he has struggled in recent years, and the Browns traded him to the Carolina Panthers in 2022, before he eventually joined the Buccaneers.
This legal case is the latest distraction which could disrupt his career on the field.
