The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems a $202-million contract to provide modernization and maintenance services for two US Navy guided-missile destroyers.

Work will be performed on the USS Laboon (DDG 58) under a $114-million Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) contract, while the USS Wasp (LHD 1) will receive services outlined under a Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) contract.

Under the DSRA contract, with options that could bring the cumulative value to $117 million, the British defense manufacturer will dry dock the USS Laboon for underwater hull maintenance.

It will repair the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer’s main propulsion system, and preserve its internal ballast, fuel tanks, and external superstructure for operational readiness and efficiency.

In addition, the ship’s crew berthing and dining compartments will be rehabilitated.

Meanwhile, the SRA contract for the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Wasp includes mechanical work in the engineering spaces, inspection and repair of the interior hull structures, and refurbishing of the habitable spaces for the ship’s crew and embarked marines.

It also provides options that can raise the value to $104 million.

Work will begin on the ships by February and March 2025.

“The award of these two contracts will provide extensive work for our Norfolk shipyard team,” BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair VP and General Manager David M. Thomas, Jr. said.

“We look forward to using our proven experience on recent LHD and DDG work to return these ships to the fleet in the finest condition.”

In September, BAE Systems also clinched a $177.8-million contract to maintain and modernize the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey.
