Avocado Farmers in Githunguri to Launch New Cooperative
The Githunguri Avocado Cooperative Society (GAS) will officially launch on 12th September 2025 at Githunguri Stadium. The event will bring together farmers, agribusiness partners, financial institutions, and key players in the agriculture sector.
Empowering Farmers and Strengthening Markets
The cooperative unites hundreds of avocado farmers from Githunguri and nearby areas. Its goal is to transform livelihoods by giving farmers access to better markets, technical training, and financial support. The launch marks a significant milestone in efforts to position Kiambu as a hub for Kenya’s growing avocado industry.
Organizers explained that the cooperative will help smallholder farmers address persistent challenges. These include limited market access, post-harvest losses, and weak bargaining power.
By working under one umbrella, farmers can now compete fairly and tap into lucrative local and international avocado markets.
Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba, Githunguri Constituency MP, has championed the initiative from the start.
“This cooperative is a dream realized for our farmers. It will not only open new doors for better markets and training but also improve livelihoods and strengthen the agricultural backbone of Githunguri,” she said.

Strong Partnerships and Future Prospects
The event has attracted strong support from local and regional partners. Key backers include the Githunguri Constituency Office, Githunguri Dairy Cooperative, Equity Bank, Nova Garden Limited, Komothai Coffee Growers Society, and several fresh produce exporters and agribusiness firms.
Organizers expect over 1,000 participants, including farmers, investors, and government officials. The launch will also feature exhibitions, training sessions on modern farming techniques, and discussions on value addition and export opportunities.
This launch comes as Kenya cements its status as a leading global avocado exporter. Cooperatives such as GAS are playing a vital role in raising quality standards, boosting collective marketing, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
