The ATAF Women in Tax Network (AWITN) is gaining international recognition for its role in advancing gender equality in Africa’s tax systems. Most recently, AWITN was featured in the Office of the Tax Ombud’s Fair Play publication, which spotlighted its work in bridging gender gaps through mentorship, advocacy, and gender-responsive tax policy.
Since its launch in 2021, AWITN has worked to address the underrepresentation of women in tax leadership and policy spaces. Its flagship Mentorship Programme has supported more than 200 mentees, connecting them with experienced professionals across Africa. In 2025 alone, nearly 300 applications were received, underscoring the demand for guidance and opportunities for women in tax.
“Mentorship is not just about guiding others – it’s a reciprocal journey of growth and self-awareness.” – Dr. Nthabiseng Debeila, Lead: ATAF Women in Tax Network
AWITN’s advocacy is also driving systemic change. The AWITN Pledge, signed by 21 African countries, represents a continental commitment to gender-inclusive tax systems. These commitments are translating into practical reforms, such as extended maternity leave and flexible work policies at the Namibia Revenue Agency.
The Network’s impact has extended beyond Africa, influencing the Network of Tax Organisations (NTO) to establish women’s initiatives in other regions and contributing to the G20 Women’s Empowerment Working Group, where it supports global efforts to close gender gaps in pay, participation, and leadership.
Through mentorship, leadership development, and global advocacy, AWITN is helping shape tax systems that are not only more effective but also more inclusive.
