FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Release

Pretoria, 13 September 2024,

The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Pravin Gordhan, former South African Minister of Finance and
the inaugural Chairperson of ATAF. Mr Gordhan passed away this morning. Mr Pravin Gordhan’s tenure as the first Chairperson of ATAF, from 2009 to 2012, was instrumental in laying the foundation for the Forum’s long-term success. Under his leadership, ATAF grew into a vital organisation focused on enhancing tax administration across Africa. His vision of improving domestic resource mobilisation (DRM) and building stronger tax institutions has profoundly impacted the continent.

“Pravin Gordhan was a towering figure in shaping ATAF’s mission and vision. As our first Chairperson, he provided critical leadership that guided the organisation in its formative years. His work was rooted in the belief that strengthening tax systems was key to achieving Africa’s development goals,” said ATAF Chairperson Dr. Phillip Tchodie. “His legacy will endure through the policies and systems we continue to implement today. His loss is deeply felt, but his contributions to African tax administration will forever remain integral to our progress.”

ATAF Executive Secretary, Mr Logan Wort, also attributed Mr Gordhan’s contributions: “Mr Gordhan’s leadership during ATAF’s early years helped build the Forum into the robust institution it is today. He championed the need for cooperation and collaboration among African tax administrations, understanding that our collective strength would improve tax governance and public revenue across the continent. His vision continues to guide us in our work, and we are forever grateful for his contribution.”

During his time as Chairperson, Mr Gordhan worked tirelessly to promote tax justice and strengthen the capacity of African tax administrations to mobilise resources for development. His leadership and dedication to Africa’s progress were evident in his work with ATAF and throughout his distinguished public service career. ATAF extends its deepest condolences to Mr Gordhan’s family, friends, and colleagues. His passing is a significant loss to the ATAF community and the African continent.
