The demise of iconic art patron and CEO of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe has dealt a huge blow to art communities across the world.

Herbert Wigwe was a passionate lover and collector of timeless and priceless indigenous and foreign artwork. Until his demise in a recent helicopter crash which also claimed the life of his wife, son and a former president of the Nigerian stock exchange, Herbert Wigwe was a pillar in the African art space.

Beyond the aesthetic value of art pieces, Wigwe believed artworks were his muse when inspiration ebbs; have shaped how he visualises the world; and are to him much more than cultural touchstones worthy of admiration.

The news of his departure was greeted with deep sadness from art lovers and enthusiasts around the world. Paying homage to the great patron, ArtX Lagos said in a statement:

“Dr. Herbert O. Wigwe was the first patron to believe in the vision of ART X Lagos and he became our greatest supporter over the years, through the institutions he led – Access Bank and Access Holdings. There are no words to adequately explain who he was to us, or to express our profound gratitude for the phenomenal support he gave to the arts and culture community across Nigeria and Africa, as well as his remarkable contribution to the elevation of the African narrative.”

SMO Contemporary, in a befitting tribute, celebrated the late Herbert Wigwe as a legendary champion. The organization expressed admiration for his incredible energy, vision, inspirational leadership, and profound love for life and art, also affirming that these qualities will forever radiate like a beacon.

As numerous art organizations and enthusiasts join in honouring the esteemed art benefactor, our heartfelt prayers go out for the departed souls to find rest in perfect peace. May their loved ones also find solace and comfort during this difficult time.
