DarwinAI has worked with multiple companies to produce innovative AI technology and inspect components during the manufacturing process. The company previously worked with multiple industries, but now will dedicate all its resources to tech giant Apple. One of DarwinAI’s signatures in the industry is making artificial intelligence systems more compact, yet just as fast. Apple will likely look to incorporate this technology into its devices moving forward, increasing AI capabilities.

Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build DarwinAI, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the acquisition. When asked about the deal, Apple only disclosed that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time” but won’t discuss its plans.

As Apple ramps up its AI initiative this year, the company will likely utilize the experts from DawinAI in the development of the iOS18 software update. The update is expected to bring more innovation in the form of generative AI. Generative AI is the technology used within ChatGPT. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has promised that Apple will “break new ground” in AI this year. Additionally, he shared that an announcement will come soon with updates.

Now, with the acquisition of DarwinAI, Apple can get back into the AI battle. The company has fallen behind due to the rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Furthermore, fellow tech company giants Google and Microsoft Corp. have also made significant advancements in their AI capabilities, generating more competition in the industry. iOS18 will be an important step for Apple’s future in AI and will set the tone for what could be a big comeback for the company.
