After nearly two decades in development, Angola’s new Chinese-funded Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) has officially begun passenger operations. The project, managed by China National Aero-technology International Engineering Corporation, faced several setbacks since its 2005 launch, including a contract termination in 2017. However, a new agreement in 2020 led to the resumption of work, culminating in its completion in 2023. Cargo flights began at the new airport in February 2024. However, passenger flights were delayed until this November. The new facility, capable of handling 130,000 tons of cargo annually in its initial phase, with an expansion capacity of up to 444,000 tons, aims to be a major aviation hub in sub-Saharan Africa, potentially rivaling South Africa’s OR Tambo International Airport. Although China funded the airport’s construction, Angola retains full control over its operations.
