Angola has officially ended its mediation role in the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, and the M23 rebels, citing failed talks and external interference. Luanda referenced last week’s fiasco, which saw the M23 pull out of direct negotiations with the DRC, a day before it was scheduled to occur, due to EU sanctions against its leaders and Rwandan officials. Angola stated that its exit will allow it to focus on its core priorities as the African Union Chair, including peace, economic development, infrastructure, and justice for Africans. While all parties in the conflict have since indicated that they are open to de-escalation, Angola’s departure leaves the peace process uncertain, raising concerns about the region’s stability and the potential for further violence.
