Google has appointed Nigerian Alex Okosi to head its operations across Africa. In his role as the new leader of Google Africa, Okosi will be responsible for overseeing initiatives aimed at improving internet accessibility and driving economic growth on the continent through the provision of essential digital tools.
Okosi expressed his excitement about the role and emphasized his belief in the transformative potential of technology, particularly the internet, in improving the lives of individuals and businesses in Africa.
With two decades of experience in the media and technology sectors, Okosi previously served as the Managing Director of YouTube for emerging markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Additionally, he played a key role in establishing the $100 million Black Voices Fund in the EMEA region.
Meir Brand, Google’s vice president for emerging markets in the EMEA region, praised Okosi’s extensive leadership experience in media and technology, as well as his deep understanding of African nations. He commended Okosi’s passion for utilizing technology to empower both individuals and businesses.
Okosi’s appointment is expected to accelerate Google’s commitment, made in October 2021, to invest US$1 billion over the next five years in Africa. This funding initiative aims to support the continent’s digital transformation by expanding internet access, bolstering startups, empowering businesses and assisting non-profit organizations.
