Uganda has been making headlines in the digital commerce world recently thanks to news involving two of its leading operators, Airtel and MTN, and leading payment enablers Network International and Mastercard.
Airtel Money, the dedicated mobile money platform for Airtel Africa, and Network International (Network), an enabler of digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa, say they have begun the rollout of digital payment solutions across key African markets, starting with Uganda. More activations are scheduled for the rest of Africa and Francophone countries in 2025.
As part of this collaboration, Network will provide expertise and support for solutions including transaction processing, card management, fraud prevention, APIs sandbox, reconciliation and settlement, and online access for Airtel users.
Network International provides a full suite of technology-enabled payments solutions to merchants and financial institutions of all types and sizes, including acquiring and processing services and a comprehensive ever-evolving range of value-added services. It currently serves 50 countries across the MEA region, including more than 40 African markets.
This news comes only a week after MTN Mobile Money in Uganda, in partnership with Mastercard, Diamond Trust Bank and, again, Network International, launched the Virtual Card by MoMo, an innovative payment solution designed to enable MTN MoMo subscribers to perform secure online transactions without needing a physical card or bank account.
The Virtual Card by MoMo allows users to make card-based online payments on any e-commerce platform, website, or social media channel that accepts card payments, offering a seamless and secure experience. Whether paying for school fees, boosting social media presence, shopping online, or booking travel, MTN MoMo says, its subscribers can now enjoy the benefits of a Mastercard-powered virtual card through their MoMo Wallet.
After a simple application process, the card is automatically linked to the customer’s MoMo Wallet. Transactions are safeguarded by the highest industry standards, minimising the risks associated with physical card usage.
Users can also benefit from enhanced financial flexibility, as they can top up only the amount needed for each transaction. The card also provides access to exclusive offers, such as potential rewards, partnerships, and discounts, including deals on air tickets.
