The NH90 Sea Tiger helicopter has completed 11 months of flight tests, paving the way for delivery to the German Navy at the end of next year.
The phase included various operational scenarios and tested the aircraft’s mission system, including sonar, electro-optical observation and targeting systems, and weaponry.
“In total, more than 140 flight hours have been logged over the past 11 months, and all of the helicopter’s capabilities have been confirmed,” Airbus Helicopters explained about the trials.
$2.9 Billion Acquisition
A total of 31 Sea Tiger helicopters were ordered by the German Navy in 2020 for 2.7 billion euros ($2.89 billion).
The helicopters will operate from the German Navy’s frigates, replacing the Sea Lynx Mk88A fleet, which entered service in 1981.
The navy already operates 18 NH90 Sea Lion naval transport helicopters, which were delivered between 2019 and 2023.
NH90 Sea Tiger
The Sea Tiger is the latest version of the NATO frigate helicopter (NFH), specifically designed to meet the needs of the German Navy.
It features a mission system focused on anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, including a new electro-optical system and improved electronic support measures, along with a dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and weapons (torpedoes and missiles).
Additional missions include reconnaissance, search and rescue, and transport.
