Currently, Morocco has identified the need to create more jobs to stifle the discontent amongst the country’s youth.
Across the globe, young people, particularly the generation recognized as the GenZs, have been altering government structures with rapid and intense demonstrations.
In recent months, the youth populations in Nepal and Madagascar have successfully overthrown their respective governments, while the youth in Kenya have effectively compelled their government to address their concerns.
In Morocco, a similar trend is materializing as young men and women have taken to the streets to simply demand social justice and economic reforms.
The protests also aim to highlight the frustration of Moroccan youths regarding the 2030 World Cup, which the country plans to host despite fiscal difficulties among households.
A group calling itself GenZ 212 has been leading a series of peaceful and sometimes violent protests that have rattled the nation for weeks.
To rally support, the gang used social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and the gaming software Discord.
These protests have unfortunately resulted in some casualties, which has compelled demonstrators to regroup and advocate for peaceful sit-ins, scheduled to commence on Saturday.
Regardless, the country’s finance minister has revealed that calls for economic reforms and the creation of more jobs must take center stage to quell the outrage of a group frustrated by the country’s economic ecosystem.
“We can’t just be waiting for economic theories to work and jobs to come,” Finance and Economy Minister Nadia Fettah Alaoui said Tuesday in a panel discussion at the Stimson Center think tank in Washington, where she is attending meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. “Jobs have to come now.”
According to the minister, as seen on Bloomberg, Morocco intends to begin pay negotiations with university instructors as part of a larger initiative to enhance education and training, noting that the country in North Africa needs long-term changes.
“Every dirham we spend needs to be as close as possible to the youngest people’s opportunities,” she said.
