In a statement signed by Tuduetso Mokgosi, Director of Public Service – Government Communications, the Botswana government confirmed that Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign military installation, fully owned, operated, and controlled by the Botswana Defence Force
The government said the facility plays a critical role in strengthening Botswana’s emergency response capabilities, supporting regional peacekeeping missions, and maintaining the operational readiness of its armed forces.
“Botswana does not host a United States military base. Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign military installation owned, operated and controlled entirely by the Botswana Government through the Botswana Defence Force.” the statement noted.
The statement urged media organizations and political actors to verify information before making public claims about the country’s defense posture.
Officials warned that misinformation about national security matters could create unnecessary tension among citizens and neighboring states.
Rising geopolitical competition for military access in Africa
The United States and its allies have expanded defense partnerships across Africa in recent years, often focusing on counter-terrorism cooperation, training programs, and logistical support facilities rather than permanent bases.
As global demand for critical minerals and precious resources intensifies, Botswana has been careful to maintain a balanced foreign policy that safeguards its resource sovereignty while engaging international partners.
Africa’s geographic location makes it strategically valuable for monitoring key global trade routes, including maritime corridors linking the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and the Mediterranean. Military facilities on the continent can support rapid deployment capabilities, intelligence operations, and humanitarian missions.
Despite these dynamics, Botswana said it remains committed to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with all its neighbors while safeguarding its sovereignty.
Botswana also reiterated its commitment to regional cooperation, dialogue, and transparency in matters of public interest, as the Southern African nation seeks to balance international partnerships with its long-standing policy of independent and sovereign defense management.
